Those who dared to confront nature's fury by climbing active volcanoes.
1. Philip Carroll: Dropped his phone into the crater of Mount Vesuvius, Italy, in July 2022. He slipped and fell into the crater while attempting to retrieve it but was rescued with only serious scrapes and cuts.
2. Klyuchevskaya Sopka Tragedy: In August 2022, a group from Extreme Time in Novosibirsk, Russia, was climbing Klyuchevskaya Sopka volcano. A blizzard caused the group to slip off the cliff, resulting in the deaths of five men.
3. John Slemp: Fell into the crater of Mount Saint Helens, Washington, in April 2008. He survived the fall with only minor injuries.
4. George Kourounis: In 2013, he had a close call with erupting lava at the Marum Crater, Vanuatu, suffering only a small burn on his protective suit.
5. Maasai Guide in Tanzania: Fell into the Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano in 2007 but survived with burns due to the lower temperature of the natrocarbonatite lava.
6. Massimiliano Carrer and Tiziana Zaramella: Along with their two kids, they visited the Solfatara volcano, Pozzuoli, Italy, in 2017. The family perished after falling into the crater and being poisoned by sulfur dioxide gases.
7. Kiyoko Matsumoto: In 1933, jumped into the Mihara volcano on Japan's Izu-Oshima island, ending her life.
8. Mihara Volcano Suicide Epidemic: By 1935, almost 1,300 people had taken their lives by jumping into Mihara volcano.
9. White Island Tragedy: In December 2019, 20 tourists lost their lives during an eruption on White Island, New Zealand. The victims included Matt Urey and Lauren Barham, who were severely injured.
