In this video I look at the three basic circuit configurations that can be used for transistor circuit design: common emitter, common collector or emitter follower and common base.

Each has its own properties so you can select the right one for your design.

One of the most common configuration is the common emitter: this gives a medium amount of gain and the input and output are 180 degrees out of phase. It's widely used for general amplifiers.

Next is the common collector or emitter follower. This gives unity gain with the input and output signals in-phase.
It has a high input resistance and low output resistance making but ideal as a buffer stage. It gains its name because the emitter follows the base voltage ableit 0.6 volts lower for a silicon transistor.

Finally there's the common base. This is the least commonly used but it has a low input impedance. It has a low power gain and medium voltage gain. But having the base earthed means that it is inherently more stable at RF because the input and output are more isolated.
