To mark the 100th anniversary of Route 66, I’m taking a cross-country roadtrip on the Mother Road — along with a caravan of classic cars, Route 66 historians and the Big Texan Steak Ranch from Amarillo, who’s towing their giant fiberglass steer Big Moo the entire way from Santa Monica to Chicago!
In part 2, the caravan faced a tragedy with the death of renowned historian T. Lindsay Baker, who was driving his 1930 Model A Ford cross-country for the 5th time. Dr. Baker was a true lover of Route 66, and his family insisted that he would have wanted the caravan to continue on — and so we did, through the rest of Arizona and New Mexico, with Dr. Baker’s legacy in our thoughts. Despite spider bites and tearful meltdowns, we made it through the desert, into the mountains…and on to the plains, exploring all manner of curiosities and historical relics along the way.
