When Jacob was traveling from Beersheba towards Haran, he stopped at Luz to rest. He used one of the stones of that place, a stone that had been discarded by builders, as his pillow. While sleeping that night, he had a dream about a ladder reaching to heaven, with angels ascending and descending upon it.
And the Lord stood above the ladder and said, “I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed; and thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed. And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.” Genesis 28:13-15
When he woke up, Jacob said “Surely, the LORD is in this place! How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven!,” and he called the name of the place Bethel, meaning “house of God.” And he anointed the stone that he had laid his head upon and set it up as a pillar, consecrating it as a sacred monument.
Jacob later went back to Bethel, where he anointed the stone again and remembered there the vow that he had made and that God had kept His Word to him. This was a significant moment in Jacob’s life.
Many years later, we see that Jacob’s descendants carried a special anointed stone with them throughout their many years of wandering in the wilderness, and which miraculously gave them water during their wanderings. 1 Corinthians 10:4
That stone is called the Stone of Witness. “Behold, this stone shall be a witness unto us; for it hath heard all the words of the Lord which he spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness unto you, lest ye deny your God.” Joshua 24:27
Jacob’s descendants still have that stone today, and it is one of their most treasured possessions.
