dutchsinse | TR Goulding Castle , Ironton Missouri — An amazing stay, awesome Air BnB @dutchsinse | Uploaded January 2023 | Updated October 2024, 1 hour ago.
Located in Ironton Missouri, this castle was built in 1846-- next to Pilot Knob Peak, and Elephant Rocks State park. This incredible castle home was built by Dr. T R Goulding , medical doctor, surgeon, and professional geologist.
Dr. Goulding was thanked by the Geological Survey of Missouri for his help.. share.mo.gov/nr/mgs/MGSData/Publications%20of%20the%20Missouri%20Geological%20Survey%20from%201853-1900/Bulletin%20No.%202,%20A%20Bibliography%20of%20the%20Geology%20of%20Missouri/PFS-13.pdf
Additionally Dr. Goulding also published something regarding how to process Tin ore of Missouri.. share.mo.gov/nr/mgs/MGSData/Publications%20of%20the%20Missouri%20Geological%20Survey%20from%201853-1900/Bulletin%20No.%205/PFS-16.pdf

This is an absolute gem of a home, fully restored, nicely done, and centrally located in the town of Ironton itself. Here is the airbnb listing, airbnb.com/rooms/52281265?source_impression_id=p3_1673804030_CMT5qQLz6fYBssyM I am not affiliated with, nor do I get any compensation for recommending this. They didn't know Dutchsinse was staying at this spot (my wife reserved the place).
This castle resides fairly in the middle of the giant ancient volcanic complex I discovered by accident. The volcanic field begins near Hughes Mountain recreation area, and extends through Ironton, Southeast all the way to Cherokee Pass, MO. The hexagonal basalt columns at Hughes mountain area is what clued me in to this being an ancient volcanic complex. I could find NO documentation, or references to this ancient volcanic field anywhere.
Volcanic complex begins here with hexagonal basalt columns visible coming out of the surface of the peaks google.com/maps/@37.8085865,-90.7136702,835m/data=!3m1!1e3
The volcanic complex extends directly across Elephant Rocks, Shepherd Mountain, Pilot Knob, and carries on down to Cherokee Pass, MO google.com/maps/@37.4931782,-90.3281373,3391m/data=!3m1!1e3
______
As for the castle itself, it appears to be made from stones of Missouri, including limestone and red granite from the nearby Elephant Rock red granite.
I decided to leave a book, and a rock specimen from my collection in the library of the home, if you go to stay, you'll likely figure out which book I put into the collection, and hopefully see the rock as well!
As you can see, classical statues are also on property.. two of the statues are said to have been commissioned by a sculptor (french) who was known for doing Religious portraits and miniature portraits, who later became well know for 1904 Worlds Fair work.
We stayed here last night (January 14, 2023), and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves!!
I will post a link so you all can check out this property!! The cost is not bad either, costing equal to a night at a 4star hotel !
I recommend this place with 5 out of 5 stars !!!
