On Sept. 25, Toyota Motor opened its experimental “Woven City,” a testing ground for cutting-edge technologies in mobility, logistics, robotics and other areas, that has been five years in the making.

Located in the foothills of Mount Fuji, the city will be home to around 300 people in its first phase to provide a real-world setting for improving autonomous driving technologies.

The project is in line with Toyota Motor Chairman Akio Toyoda's 2018 comments stating his goal to "transition Toyota from an automobile company to a mobility company," adding that, "Technology is changing quickly in our industry and the race is on."
