Toyota brought a wild Hilux Champ 4x4 concept to Overland Expo Mountain West, and I had the chance to ask a Toyota engineer what’s really going on.

This compact truck combines a shortened platform, 4.0L V6, four-wheel drive, locking rear differential, solid rear axle, and up to 1,700 pounds of payload capacity... But there’s a catch. If Toyota sells it in America, it may only be available as an off-highway vehicle competing with enclosed side-by-sides from Polaris and Can-Am.
