The 2023 Toyota GR Corolla is one of the most anticipated cars of the year. It's the Japanese automaker's purest expression of a modern hot hatch. And spicy it is. If you're lucky enough to get one of these you've got a future classic on your hands. The AWD system is near flawless in its power delivery. It simply sends torque where you need it on demand. A dial on the center console gives you a choice of 60/40, 50/50 or 30/70 torque split for diffferent conditions.
Toyota let us loose at Utah Motorsports Campus to wring out the GR's newest family member on track. It does not disappoint. It's superbly balanced and has high levels of mechanical grip. The transmision has a little heft to it, and it's very positive acting and easy to heel and toe. The electric steering rack is among the best in the business. There's more feedback and feel than any car in recent memory this side of a Porsche. It never complained once about the heat despite the temperature being near 100 all day long.
I can think of very few negatives. Sure the cabin is largely unchanged from a regular Corolla. The seats are wonderfully grippy and the Brin-Naub suede like material in the Circuit and Morizo Edition up the ante. It's a comfortable daily driver. There isn't a ton of cargo space, and the back seat is pretty small, but those are triffles compared to how well dialed in this car is.
However, despite the incredible nature of this car, it does have one problem. A problem that Toyota can't solve. Click to find out what that is.
