Corexit 9500 is a solvent originally developed by Exxon and now manufactured by the Nalco in Illinois. Corexit is is four times more toxic than oil (oil is toxic at 11 ppm (parts per million), Corexit 9500 at only 2.61ppm).
In a report written by Anita George-Ares and James R. Clark for Exxon Biomedical Sciences, Inc. titled "Acute Aquatic Toxicity of Three Corexit Products: An Overview" Corexit 9500 was found to be one of the most toxic dispersal agents ever developed.
According to the Clark and George-Ares report, Corexit mixed with the higher gulf coast water temperatures becomes even more toxic.

BP has been using Corexit9500 and Corexit9527 since the cleanup efforts started on April 22 after the collapse of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. Early May, the EPA send a request to BP management to stop using the toxic chemical compounds and advised to choose another remedy from their list of approved dispersants.
The official response from BP stated that due to the limited availability of alternative dispersants such as Dispersit, the company would continue to use the highly toxic chemical compound. The letter, obtained by the Associated Press, also referred to the EPA's approval of the dispersant as well as its high efficiency during the cleanup of the Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989....
More than 1 million gallons have already been sprayed over the oil spill and are being poured over the riser pipe at the ocean bottom.
The Corexit that rises from the ocean floor gets warmed up by the natural water temperature and transforms itself from liquid to a gaseous state when it reaches the surface and where it will be absorbed in the surrounding air. The toxic compound will ultimately be captured by cloud formations that will reach the shores and sprinkle beaches, roads and fertile lands.
The inhalation of both versions, Corexit 9500 and 9527, can cause permanent damage to red blood cells, liver and kidneys, all of which are non reversible.
Several cleanup workers have already reported symptoms such as nausea, dizziness and headaches since May 26 but continue to work because this is their only livelihood.
Hugh Kaufman, senior policy analyst of the EPA, compares the current oil spill cleanup with the World Trade Center and the Exxon Valdez case and states " There is no way to work in this toxic soup without getting exposed".
The Louisiana Shrimpers Association demands respirators for all the fishermen that participate in the cleanup but so far BP has not responded to their request, claiming that the air is safe to breathe.
