Feeling Electric! ⚡️We took our all-new Happier Camper HC1 Studio travel trailer through the mountains of California, pulled by the Rivian R1T Launch Edition, and here's how it went...
The HC1 Studio is ultra light at about 1800 lbs so hooking up and towing was easy and comfortable. The R1T has a tow feature that senses the tongue weight and auto adjusts its hydraulic suspension to match. It has a built-in brake controller with steering wheel controls that can adjust the sensitivity in conjunction with the truck's brakes. The R1T typically gets about 300 miles on a full charge in "conserve mode", which goes down to 275 or so in regular driving modes. With towing mode its distance measure is cut in half, but we found the mileage went up from that a bit with the light weight HC1 Studio.
The 90 mile trip up the mountain was dead-on what it suggested it would take in battery life and that gave us the confidence we needed to know we would arrive with battery life to spare. After the trip we charged up again, and on the way down the regeneration on the motors took no extra miles off and we actually gained extra mileage. Because of the regeneration on the way down, we didn’t need to use the brakes very much, so no grinding of pads and the typical smell of overworked brakes.
Towing through the fire roads was easy and fun. One great thing about electric vehicles is how quiet they are. Birds and wild life weren’t driven away when passing through the forest, like we weren’t even there. So mark one up for a serious reduction in noise pollution and better stewardship.
The HC1 Studio we brought has a lifted package, so off-road trails were easy to pull through with lots of ground clearance. It was cool to have the extra power at the campsite from the trucks 2 AC plugs in the bed and we were also able to keep a @truma electric fridge in the back of the truck for cold drinks and snacks.
It’s a different experience to plan your trips so closely around power consumption, but it was also easy and the money we saved on fuel costs went into extra s’mores. All and all it was a pleasure, and we hope to see more of these adventures soon. Onward! ⚡️
