The challenging times and uncertainties associated with a range of perils from climate change, natural hazards and pandemics requires fresh thinking to understand, characterise and deal with these challenges and help society progress to a more resilient and sustainable future. Emerging perils, whether they be extreme climatic events, earthquakes, or pandemics, have highlighted deficiencies in our systems, and provide an ideal laboratory with data for us to learn from.
The webinar explores the simple metrics of resilience developed, that enable effective characterization of resilience. This has helped develop a resilience-based design approach focusing on functionality, rather than purely life safety or damage-based approaches used in our traditional methods. This approach can provide the future resilience we strive for, at reduced cost and carbon footprint.
Early focus on resilience and sustainability-based design represents a paradigm shift in thinking to address the twin effects of climate change – resilience to unfolding events and decarbonisation to reverse changes.
