When you go visit Gran Canaria and especially Playa del Inglés, you're bound to meet these African women while walking on the beach promenade. They will ask you for your name and try to grab your hand to start wrapping a rope around it and "tell your fortune". Then they will in group attempt to persuade you to give them money.
Just brush them off the second they approach you. Walk past them and ignore them. They are vultures who feed on people who don't want to be rude. When we tried to film and photograph them, they pointed their fingers at us.
Cheers
