I decided to test out this small motor to see what potential it might have for application on a 2 x 72 knife grinding machine. I designed a special drive assembly for this motor to allow it to operate to its strengths and beef up it weak areas. So far testing of the motor have indicated that it is a real option for an affordable VFD on a 2 x 72 grinder. I am not talking about an ok choice that will barely manage to grind a knife. I am talking about a serious contender that can run the belt up to 7000 Surface feet per minute and pulls very good on super heavy removals. I grind with a bevel guide that puts heavy pressure on the belt which requires a powerful motor to be able to handle. My previous motor was a 5 HP with step pulleys for speed changes. I did not want to give up any power because I had become accustom to grinding hard and very fast and like it. This motor has proven itself in testing so far to the point that I completely removed the 5 hp from the machine and committed to this motor. Conventional motors of this HP rating with VFD run $1,200.00 and up plus install and drive wheel.
