This is a four minute clip of the approach and arrival of the Total Eclipse in Shanghai on July 22, 2010 as experienced by a photographer and his eight year old grandson.
A Total Eclipse of the Sun is dramatic, awesome, frightening, stunning. It is as many adjectives as you can imagine, and then some. Darkness at noon is no joke when the sky darkens over the period of almost an hour, then goes BLACK for the period of the eclipse.
The 2010 eclipse over China didn't disappoint. No, we were not able to see the ring of fire because of clouds, but we saw and experienced the darkness of midnight though the hour was almost noon. The darkness enveloped the crowd on the socker field at Shanghai Normal University and rain began to fall as the temperature dropped nearly fifteen degrees within minutes. There was an audible gasp from the crowd as the moon covered the sun and the sky went completely black.
It takes little imagination to understand why people of an earlier age quaked with fear at the arrival of this awesome, unknowable phenomenon.
