This couple is pulled over by a Utah deputy for speeding. After doing some background checks, the officer finds that the driver has a warrant out for forgery in Maryland but she could only be extradited back from an adjoining state. The officer writes a warning ticket for the speeding and then asks if he can search the vehicle, which the passenger claimed was owned by his cousin. The officer claimed the passenger said "sure" but it is too soft to be heard on the audio. After a backup officer arrives and the officer starts his search, the couple gets nervous and jumps back into the car, speeding off. The officers attempt to disable the vehicle by firing shots is unsuccessful. After a brief high speed chase, where the suspects can be seen throwing out what appears to be drugs from the car, a final shot from the backup officer disables the vehicle and it comes to a stop.
A judge later ruled that the officer's search was unlawful for lack of consent and agreed to the defendant's motion to suppress from evidence the five pounds of marijuana that was originally found. But the PCP that was thrown out of the vehicle was not suppressed. The male passenger ended up getting a 192 month sentence, charged with possession with the intent to distribute, a sentence that was later commuted by President Clinton.
