My Velotric Breeze 1 e-bike can use both torque and cadence sensors. A torque sensor responds to how much power you apply so that when you’re in a high mechanical (i.e., derailleur) gear at a good spin, the bike handles more like a standard bike (called these days either ‘acoustic’ or ‘analog’ bikes 😀) and the motor responds to your input by increasing the speed. A cadence sensor, on the other hand, has set intervals as to how fast the motor moves you. With five Power Assist levels, level 1 will generally top out at 7-8 mph, level 2 at 12 mph, etc. up to 20 mph in level 5.
My first e-bike - a Velotric Discover 1 - had only a cadence sensor, however, the Breeze has both. I knew this but hadn’t learned how to switch between the sensors when riding. A friend told me how to do it so I took my bike out to give it a try and that’s the focus of this video. Along the way, I share some of my thoughts on long distance, overnight rides I hope to do during 2026.
