A Toronto police officer was shot and killed Thursday during an early-morning raid. The force said it was related to a shooting at the U.S consulate in the city earlier this year.

The officer was killed while executing a search warrant in the area of Black Creek and Trethewey drives in the northwest part of the city.

Police Chief Myron Demkiw said the warrant was related to “a number of shootings,” including one that targeted the U.S. consulate in downtown Toronto in March. Two gunmen shot the exterior of the consulate and no one was injured.

American prosecutors have previously linked the shooting to an Iraqi man accused of running a terrorism network allegedly responsible for attacks in Canada, Europe and the United States.

The force identified the slain officer as Constable Marc Pinizzotto.
Special Investigations Unit said the officer was killed in an “exchange of gunfire” that also wounded a suspect.

The 19-year-old alleged gunman was hit multiple times, SIU spokeswoman Monica Hudon told reporters, and was in critical condition. #Toronto #Police #Canada
