"Ten years ago I had just moved to Berkeley, CA from Columbia, SC. I was 25 and just getting used to living away from my home state for the first time. About a year prior to moving there a friend introduced me to Pat Brown and his amazing staff at Different Fur Recording Studios in San Francisco. Pat and I talked about making a record at Different Fur--I was really excited because I had never made a full record in a studio before, I had only worked in studios to mix my bedroom recordings. Since I was new to recording in the studio I was really deliberate with my material rather than just showing up and jamming. I wrote about 15 demos at home that I eventually brought in and finished at Different Fur.

I was exploring San Francisco and Los Angeles more, becoming more familiar with the club scene and how music works in those spaces, and Toro was starting to play bigger rooms, influencing me towards a bigger sound. Hearing the songs on 'Anything in Return' come alive in the studio was a unique and rare experience that taught me how to play with space in the sub-frequency area. Like with my previous records, the lyrics were created last in the process, so it makes me happy to share the original versions of these songs, the instrumentals, with you all.
