Hot springs are sites where groundwater emerges at the Earth’s surface (or on the seafloor). Hot spring water has to be higher in temperature than the human body (an arbitrary definition): over 98° Fahrenheit or over 37° Celsius. Geysers are hot springs that episodically erupt columns of water. The highest concentration of geysers and hot springs anywhere is at the Yellowstone Hotspot Volcano in northwestern Wyoming, USA.

Topsoil Spring is a small hot spring, about 1.3 x 1.6 meters in size, located in the Grand Group of Yellowstone’s Upper Geyser Basin. It is usually quiet, with a calm water surface. Yellowish-colored microbial mats can be present on the shallow floor of the spring. When the water is hotter, the microbial mats are absent. Occasionally, the pool’s water level is so low that only the central, funnel-shaped vent area is submerged. Topsoil’s activity includes roiling, overflowing, and occasional subterranean thumping. During some seasons, Topsoil Spring has small to moderately-small splashing eruptions.

Seen here are video clips of four apparently-unnamed hydrothermal features in the Black Sand Basin of Yellowstone’s Upper Geyser Basin. The first feature is a perpetual spouter 18 meters southwest of Ragged Spring. The second feature is a moderate-sized hot spring 22 meters south-southwest of Jagged Spring. $Cinnamon Spouter & West Cinnamon Geyser (2026) Cinnamon Spouter & West Cinnamon Geyser (2026) Geysers are hot springs that episodically erupt columns of water. They occur in few places on Earth. The highest concentration of geysers anywhere is at the Yellowstone Hotspot Volcano in northwestern Wyoming, USA. Cinnamon Spouter and West Cinnamon Geyser are located in the Black Sand Basin of Yellowstone’s Upper Geyser Basin. Cinnamon Spouter’s irregularly-shaped basin is 3 to 4 meters in diameter, with a centrally-located and irregularly-shaped vent area. West Cinnamon Geyser is located on the southwestern side of Cinnamon Spouter and has a subcircular basin 2 to 3 meters in diameter, with a ~1 meter diameter inner crater. Cinnamon Spouter first appeared in the late 1980s, under a tourist boardwalk. Early activity consisted of periodic geyser eruptions. The long-term, normal behavior of Cinnamon Spouter has become moderately low perpetual spouting that reaches about two meters high or less (usually much lower). After individual periodic eruptions occur in adjacent West Cinnamon Geyser (for example, in 2016), Cinnamon Spouter’s water level lowers and runoff ceases. Low-pool perpetual spouting can continue or activity can cease altogether, with water draining out of sight. Runoff water from Cinnamon Spouter drains to the south and southeast toward Iron Spring Creek. In 2025 and 2026, the distal runoff channel was completely dry - overflow was no longer occurring. In 1998, researchers measured the water temperature of Cinnamon Spouter at about 75° Celsius, with a pH of about 8.3 (= somewhat alkaline). West Cinnamon Geyser (also known as Cinnamon West Geyser) appeared subsequent to Cinnamon Spouters first appearance in the late 1980s. West Cinnamon Geyser was initially a fracture but has since widened into its present shape. Its normal behavior is low to very low perpetual spouting. It also has 1 to 2 meter tall geyser eruptions that occur in series, with hours- to days-long intervals between series. The first two eruptions in a series pour out large volumes of water for such a small feature. Water runs off toward the south and southwest and percolates downward into the siliceous sinter gravel. In August 2026, Cinnamon and West Cinnamon were erupting as perpetual spouters, but West Cinnamon’s splashing energy cycled from quite mild to fairly energetic (“eruptions”).
