Why are we recreating and destroying this equestrian statue of King George III?
On July 9, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was first read aloud in lower Manhattan.
That evening, an inspired group of colonial soldiers and sailors snuck back to Bowling Green and toppled a gilded lead statue of King George III.
And now, on July 9, we're commemorating that memorable act of rebellion by restaging the pulling down of the statue. Visit us to close out your 250th celebrations with one final tribute to revolution!
