One team of Germans planned for a space program, and they had some support. They started the Verein fur Raumschiffahrt, the Society for Space Ship Travel in 1927. They made and launched liquid fuelled rockets, constantly dodging the Berlin police who wanted to prevent activities that might explode and cause damage to others. The rocket launching group were led by a young physics major named Wernher von Braun.
When the Nazis took over the government they accellerated the illegal re-armament of Germany. One problem was the Versailles treaty forbade heavy artillery. However, some artillery officers had been reading about the VfR’s publicity stunts (Not all VfR activity was illegal; just the interesting bits) and decided these rockets could skate around the artillery restriction by making a self propelled artillery shell. So, they hired these guys and put them to work using a high-tech artillery development lab to design, build and test their rockets for the Army Artillery. Wernher von Braun was told the new Nazi goverment would look more eagerly at the project if he joined the party, and indeed he joined the SS. So, it was not yet officially a Nazi project, but close enough.
Eventually the Nazis threw off the “Chains of Versailles” and built a real air force and real artillery, but the rocket project showed so much promise that it was continued and expanded. There were of course bumps on the road to the stars, I mean besides the fact that they had been diverted onto a road to the long range ballistic missile. When the war started, there was some doubt in high places as to whether this project really could produce useful results before the war ended. The boss did a personal pitch to Hitler with movies of successful tests, omitting the many that ended in an explosion on the launch pad. That fixed the budget problem and Hitler personally promoted von Braun as Full Professor.
The war went on longer than expected. One day, an SS inspector found a pretty model of a rocket that couldn’t serve any military purpose; it was a space vehicle. What, spending the scarce time of a skilled machinist in wartime, on a toy spaceship? What is this, British sabotage? Professor Von Braun spent a few days in an SS jail, until the proper explanations and excuses could be made. After the failed July Coup in the Army in 1944, the SS took over all special projects of the Army, and yes, this was an extremely special project but the change was mainly just a matter of drafting all the Army personnel into the SS and putting up SS signs.
So, the V2 missiles started bombarding London and Antwerp, killing far fewer people than the V2 factories did, and speeding the Nazi defeat. The scientific staff escaped in trucks propelled by rocket fuel, from Northeast Germany to Southwest so they would become prisoners of the Americans, and were spirited off to Alabama to design and test, yes you guessed it, more and better ballistic missiles.
Eventually a Space Race developed, and at last von Braun and his bunch got the assignment they had wanted ever since 1927. Probably something similar would have happened if the Nazis had won the war. Hitler, after all, loved high tech, provided it was loud and big. The rocketeers had failed to help Germany to win, but they had succeeded in moving a substantial distance along the road to outer space.
