There was a time when Subaru was known more for its rally racing program and sporty sedans than its outdoorsy wagons and SUVs. Now that we've confirmed Subaru's legendary WRX STI model will not return to the lineup, the 2023 WRX is the last performance car from Subaru. With 271 horsepower, along with standard all-wheel drive and a sport-tuned suspension, this compact sport sedan is wildly fun to drive on a challenging mountain pass. It's also comfortable enough for the daily commute, giving it broad appeal.
The WRX has competition, though. The Honda Civic Type R is all-new this year, as is the Toyota GR Corolla. They join the returning Volkswagen Golf R and Hyundai Elantra N in the WRX's competitive set. The GR Corolla and VW Golf R are close competitors to the WRX since they also come with all-wheel drive, though the front-wheel-drive Civic Type R is good enough to satisfy drivers who prefer rear- or all-wheel drive.
2023 Mercedes Benz C Class.
The all new 2023 Mercedes Benz C Class is an artful combination of classic European luxury with leading edge technology. The "cab-backward" design emphasizes the car's long hood and prominent Mercedes-Benz grille and logo. There is certainly no missing the three-pointed star placed boldly in the middle of the car's menacing front end. The sculpted hood pays homage to legends like the mid-1950s Mercedes-Benz SLs.
Positives.
Aggressive, upscale exterior design. Luxurious interior. Mild hybrid powertrain contributes to fuel efficiency.
Considerations.
Almost too much tech to digest. Lacks plug-in hybrid version.
The C-Class is rear-wheel drive with 4Matic all-wheel drive available as an option. The turbocharged mild-hybrid engine delivers virtually the same output as the competitive BMW 330i. That's more horsepower than the base engine in the Audi A4 and Cadillac CT4. Among this set, all but the A4 are rear-wheel drive vehicles with optional all-wheel drive. The A4 comes only with all-wheel drive. In addition to the sedan that accounts for the bulk of C-Class sales, the model is offered in convertible (cabriolet) and coupe body styles. Those versions have not yet been updated to the new design.
2023 Nissan Z.
After a three-year hiatus, Nissan has reintroduced the Z sports coupe for 2023. Its retro-themed exterior styling breathes new life into the Z's storied lifetime, but the 2023 Z isn't entirely new. Underneath its new bodywork and restyled interior is the same chassis as the Nissan 370Z it replaces. It's been reinforced for added stiffness, but it's limited by a design that dates back to 2009. On the plus side, a more powerful 400-horsepower twin-turbocharged V6 engine and new suspension tunings improve handling and comfort.
This new 2023 Nissan Z continues the tradition of delivering fun driving dynamics without breaking the bank. If you're a Z fan, we're certain you'll appreciate the many improvements. Otherwise, we suggest checking out the competition that includes the Toyota GR Supra and the more affordable Ford Mustang GT or Chevrolet Camaro SS.

One of the most popular cars in the U.S., the Honda Civic delivers economy, reliability, comfort, and safety among its many virtues. But the "secret sauce" that separates it from most other compact cars is that it provides more driving enjoyment than basic low-cost transportation. That fun-to-drive character is exemplified this year by a new Type R variant. The good news, though, is you don't have to buy the Type R to get a high level of entertainment.
Positives.

Considerations.
Lacks hybrid, plug-in hybrid models. No coupe available.

Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors have abandoned the category, and the only European-designed model is the Volkswagen Jetta. Like its challengers, the Civic will seat five adults but is more comfortable for two in the rear seat. It is available as a four-door sedan and a four-door hatchback.
