How to use a ferro rod five ways — from the beginner spark shower up to the pro waxed-hemp wick that lights right in your hand.
Most people only use a ferro rod one way. These five build from the easiest (and least reliable) up to a pro move that lets you take your time with even the most stubborn tinder.
HOW TO USE A FERRO ROD — 5 METHODS
1. Shooting sparks: scrape the rod hard to throw a big spark shower. It looks the coolest but has the lowest success rate, because it only lights bone-dry tinder.
2. Machine gun: fast, short strokes that throw a ton of sparks at once. Works well, but it's easy to slam your knuckles into the ground.
3. Pull back: hold the striker still and pull the rod back toward you. The safest and most accurate method — no slammed knuckles.
4. Landmine: in tough or damp conditions, shave a pile of ferro rod dust first, then shoot one spark to ignite the whole pile at once.
5. Waxed hemp wick (pro move): wrap the rod in a waxed hemp handle, spread the fibers out next to your striker, and pull the rod back. It lights the wick right in your hand.
