Misfire may on paper only have a 12.5% chance of happening, but Luigi mains just know.

Luigi's side-b (Green missile) has a 1/8 chance in Melee (And a 1/10 chance in Smash 4) to misfire when used, causing him to explode across the stage, and causing his side-b to have massively increased damage, speed, distance, and knockback.

When a Luigi player is off-stage and recovering, there is always that extra bit of tension, considering the fact that with every side-b they could get a misfire and take out their opponent if they're not paying attention. This adds a little bit more excitement every time Luigi recovers, especially at the ends of close games.
And despite how incredibly risky and inconsistent it is, many Luigi players like to try to intentionally harness the power of the misfire. This can lead to some of the most spectacular and unexpected moments in Smash when a Luigi manages to pull off an insane combo into a misfire.
