Top 100 JRPGs of all time! Number 92: Trials of Mana
The JRPG genre has been evolving for around 40 years now. It has seen its share of ups and downs, but right now, its arguably in the best place that it has ever been. Since the early 80s, we’ve seen the releases of 1000s of JRPGs, or JRPG style titles, from hundreds of different developers, but it goes without saying that not all of them are created equally.
This series is going to look at the very best JRPGs ever made, or at least, my favorite. This is my personal top 100 JRPGs of all time! Sometimes, I like to take a break from my regular JRPG gaming habits and venture into the realm of Western RPGs. When I get into a good one, I often find myself absolutely glued to the screen, more so than most other genres.
And this is exactly what happened when playing Avowed. This game was developed by Obsidian Entertainment who are huge players in the WRPG and CRPG scene, releasing many powerhouse titles including Knights of the Old Republic, Fallout New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity.
To sum up Avowed in a few words; it is the dictionary definition of WRPG.
Is gives you absolutely everything you would expect from the genre, without ever going above and beyond in any single area.
And a big thanks to the publishers for the review code, and all footage that you see is from the STEAM version of the game.

Cry Machina! This is a JRPG that I’ve had my eye on for a while now. I mean, the fact that it tells a futuristic, sci-fi story, with fast paced action combat, and, mechanical girls, made it hard for me to ignore. The game was developed by FURYU corporation, who are also the developers of Monark, Trinity Trigger, and Crystar. In fact, Cry Machina is a spiritual successor to Crystar, but there is absolutely no requirement to have played Crystar first, as they are unrelated.
Now, during the early days of my of Cry Machina playthrough, I was unsure how I felt about it, but it eventually grew into a highly enjoyable experience, with a story that I found very engaging. The game isn’t for everyone, but if you’re into dialogue heavy, sci-fi stories, with fast paced crazy action combat, then this is definitely worth looking into it.

In 2020, my review for the original Hades was absolutely glowing with praise. The addictive gameplay loop, the fast fluid combat, the story telling style, the Art, music and atmosphere. These were the reasons that I instantly fell in love with the game, making it my favourite rogue-lite of all time.
Then, in 2025, after a couple of years in early access, Supergiant games officially released the follow up title, Hades 2, which is something that I’ve only just recently been able to play through. It is bigger, better and beautifull-er, and I feel that it was the perfect progression from Hades 1.
Hades 2 now takes the crown for my new favourite Rogue Lite, and if you’re into this genre, it’s definitely something that you need to play.

‘A love letter to JRPGs’. This is a phrase that seems to get thrown around a lot. Sometimes it seems to be whacked onto games with little to no similarities to classic RPGs , but in Cris Tales, I really did feel this love.
Cris tales was developed by independent studios Dreams Uncorporated and Syck. I’ve had my eye on this one for a while now, due to the unique, beautiful art style, and the time travel mechanics, which I love seeing in video games.
Cris Tales has a lot of great ideas, and I had a lot of fun playing through this 20 odd hour journey. It does things right, it does things wrong, but it’s definitely worth having a look at.

I think we can all agree that 2020 has been a tough year. Sometimes, you just want to take a step away from all of the blood, violence and general assholery forced upon players in most videogames. This, is where Moon comes in. The RPG that made me realize, what a jerk I’ve been over the past 25 years games.
Originally released in 1997 on the PS1 as a Japanese exclusive, Moon (known as an Anti-RPG) was finally localized and released on the Switch, in late 2020 by Onion Games.
While Moon certainly had some experienced staff behind it, what was created, was something completely unique and unlike anything I’ve ever played before. I guess this is why they call it an anti-RPG, as you don’t play the role of the traditional RPG hero, instead, your job is to spread the love, and if you ask me, the world needs a little more love during these tough times,
This review is going to look into what Moon is all about, and why you should definitely consider giving it a shot.
