CityNerd | Top 10 Public Markets/Mercados in North America: Amazing Public Spaces in Canada, the US, and Mexico @CityNerd | Uploaded December 2021 | Updated October 2024, 3 hours ago.
Today's video focuses on a key institution found in cities all over the world and throughout history: the massive, bustling, centrifuges of activity and diversity that are public markets.

Central markets/mercados have been at the heart of cities forever; you could almost say that mercantile exchange is the basic reason cities exist. Urban commerce has changed rapidly over the last 75 years, with the adoption of the automobile leading to dispersion of commercial activity to suburban malls and industrial hinterlands, and the recent rapid adoption of e-commerce and online shopping.

Yet, all over the world, central markets continue to thrive. They're amazing public spaces, and they're a forum for shoppers to come face to face with farmers, craftspeople, fishmongers, buskers, and butchers. Some of the world's most visited places are public markets, including the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul and La Boqueria in Barcelona. People come for the smells, the sights, the sounds, the flavors...and definitely the people-watching.

Today's video spans North America and includes stops at:
- The Ferry Building (San Francisco)
- West Side Market (Cleveland)
- Pike Place Market (Seattle)
- Market Square (San Antonio)
- Mercado La Cruz (Queretaro)
- Grand Central Market (LA)
- Marche Jean-Talon (Montreal)
- Mercado La Merced (CDMX)
- Reading Terminal Market (Philadelphia)
- St. Lawrence Market (Toronto)
- Findlay Market (Cincinnati)
- The Forks (Winnipeg)
- Charleston City Market
