Anyone that lives in a region with heat domes, hot summers or heat waves and heat warnings knows how hard it is to relax or sleep when it’s 27°C and up in the house. If you don’t have central or portable AC units and don’t want to or can’t spend that much money on one or just want to be more environmentally friendly, the window fan is an alternative that can help keep you cool at home.
I have found window fans work best to cool a hot room without AC. Try this solution to help you survive scorching heat in today's changing weather patterns due to global warming/climate change.
Watch to find out how to use a window fan, including which way to blow the air... in or out (Intake or Exhaust) and how to keep the cool air coming in clean!
CAUTION: Do not use this method of cooling if the outside air quality is bad and has high pollutants, smoke particles, Ozone, etc... Using this method in such conditions will bring in unwanted and dangerous particulates into your home and cause health issues.
Watch out for air quality warnings, alerts and pay attention to local weather events such as wildfires, etc... Even when pollutant levels are low, but if you have breathing related health issues like COPD, asthma, etc... you should avoid using this method of cooling even if an air filter is used.
If you decide to use an air filter with the window fan, make sure that it does not cause the fan motor to overheat if it's restricting the airflow too much. This can happen if you use the High fan speed and/or use a filter that is too restrictive or high in filtering capabilities.
Keep the fan at least an inch away from the air filter (it can be at an angle) so that there is some air space between the filter and the fan and this will help.
Overheating can cause the fan motor to burn out!
NOTE: I find that an air filter with MERV6/MPR500 rating is a good balance between filtering and air flow.
Also, if you live in an area that has polluted or dirty air, a window fan may not be the best choice as it could bring in dirty air into your room causing allergy or breathing issues.
