The “02SS” armoured aerosani was an experimental Soviet armored fighting vehicle developed in the early months of 1941. Conceived in response to operational difficulties encountered by conventional vehicles during the Winter War and winter operations in general, the 02SS sought to combine the high mobility of propeller-driven aerosani with the protection and firepower of a light tank. Unlike standard aersoani used primarily for transport and reconnaissance, the 02SS featured an armoured hull and a fully enclosed turret derived from the T-40 amphibious light tank, capable of mounting a 23 mm (0.9 in) autocannon.
Developed by the TsKB-50 design bureau in Leningrad and constructed by NKVD Factory No. 5, the vehicle was an ambitious attempt to create a heavily armed patrol vehicle capable of operating independently in deep snow and frozen terrain. However, excessive weight, poor maneuverability, and high cost ultimately doomed the project. After trials in early 1941 revealed significant shortcomings, the concept was abandoned, leaving the 02SS as a little-known but striking example of prewar Soviet experimentation.
