Tony Romo is breaking his silence on his recent arrest. Over a month after the NFL alum was arrested in Wisconsin for operating a vehicle while impaired (known as an OWI), the 46-year-old released a statement confirming he pleaded “no contest” to the OWI civil offense, which he called “a recent personal failure.” And Romo isn’t shirking responsibility, adding in his Sept. 1 statement shared to social media, “I own this completely." The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback also shared a look at what his life has been like since leaving the NFL, and how injuries led him to using substances to cope. “Multiple back surgeries ended my career earlier than I expected and left me with constant, debilitating pain,” he explained. “That pain led to a dependence on pain medication, and my efforts to get off those medications led to an over-reliance on alcohol.” Romo—who shares three sons wife Candice Crawford—is looking to the future with optimism. “As I have taught my three young sons,” he continued, “when you fall short, you stand up and take full responsibility. That is an important first step.
