Matt Johnson's Tony takes a very different approach to the Anthony Bourdain biopic. Rather than trying to tell the story of Bourdain's entire life, the film focuses on one summer and plays much more like a coming-of-age story than a traditional biopic.
In this review, I talk about why I think that approach works, the film's fantastic cast, Matt Johnson's direction, and how the movie uses the people around Tony to explore the ways short relationships can have a lasting impact.
I also discuss my issues with the central relationship, why Emilia Jones's character felt underdeveloped, and why I think there's a fascinating version of this movie that could have hidden the fact that it's about Anthony Bourdain until the very end.
Overall, Tony is a charming and well-acted movie that I enjoyed watching, even if I don't think it's going to stick with me for very long.
