Tommy Oliver was more than just a Power Ranger. He was the Power Ranger. Green. White. Red. Black. If there was a color to wear, Tommy wore it, maybe except Pink, Blue, Yellow, and maybe a few others. For over 30 years, Tommy Oliver stood at the center of the Morphin Grid. From his first appearance as the evil Green Ranger to his final role as the wise Dino Thunder Black Ranger, Tommy became the legacy character of Power Rangers.
If there was a villain to fight, he fought it.
And when it was time to walk away… he did it on his own terms. He owned the right to do so, returning to his position to help the Power Rangers of the future, wether it was leading the Red Rangers on the moon, fighting the Armada with the Legendary Rangers, or fighting an evil robot ranger clone army, couldn’t really take down Robo Rita though, he became an action figure, we’re not all perfect! Tommy had his fair share of flops like being stuck in suit, or singing for a whole episode,,,impressive voice!
But every legacy has an end. And in 2018, Soul of the Dragon gave us something rare in the Power Rangers franchise—a story about getting older, letting go, and passing the torch, so Logan, this is the Logan story of Power Rangers.
Power Rangers: Soul of the Dragon is a graphic novel written by Kyle Higgins, with art by Giuseppe Cafaro. This was actually Higgins’ final Power Rangers work, after three years of launching the MMPR comics and heading on the Shattered Grid story. This was the last hurrah, a quiet, character-driven story set years after Tommy’s days of fighting in spandex are over. The late Jason David Frank was also a special consultant of the story, so he for sure loved it.
