Tomioka Silk Mill is an interesting and unusual UNESCO World Heritage Site in Japan. Located to the north of Tokyo, Tomioka Silk Mill is a great example of Japan's rapid industrialisation in the late 19th century. The facility was built as a joint Japanese-French project, and managed every aspect of silk production: from raising silkworms, unspooling their cocoons, and spinning the threads into raw silk. There's also a host of related factory buildings including dormitories, the power plant, and much more besides. Let's check it out!
