“Tomb Raider Multiplayer: Surviving Together“
The next Tomb Raider aims to reinvent the legendary franchise. This fresh start introduces a new element: Multiplayer. This is a daring step. Introducing a multiplayer component to a single player franchise needs to be done for the right reasons and the right way. We will explore the process and decisions that made sure Tomb Raider’s multiplayer meets the expectations. The reboot relies on traversal, environmental puzzle and an improved combat. These three pillars needed to be at the center of the multiplayer, as well as the theme of the game: survival. The talk will revolve around three parts:
What thought process led to the decision to include multiplayer?
How did we design our systems to remain fateful to the single player experience, while creating a fun and addicting multiplayer?
How did we build a good inter studio relationship, in order to deliver a great multiplayer experience without impacting the single player development?
Joe Khoury – Producer, Eidos
Joe Khoury previously worked at Electronic Arts’ Montreal studio on such franchises as Medal of Honor, Army of Two and American Mcgee’s Alice. His inter-disciplinary experience has made him a quality oriented producer allowing him to communicate comfortably with all departments of a development team. After almost a decade at EA, Joe joined Eidos-Montreal where he would help build the team that would create Tomb Raider’s first ever Multiplayer offering.
Alexandre Breault – Lead Designer, Eidos
Alexandre Breault is currently lead game designer on Tomb Raider, at Eidos Montreal. Before that, he was lead game designer at Ubisoft Montreal on Assassin’s Creed Revelations. He also worked as game designer on other projects including Far Cry Instincts Evolution, Naruto: The Broken Bond.
