Tom Holland and Zendaya turned a 90-year-old Shanghai noodle counter into a
place people fly in for. I went to find out if the noodles deserve it.
Wei Xiang Zhai has been on the same Shanghai street since 1937, quietly serving
sesame paste noodles to the people who live around the corner. Then Tom Holland
and Zendaya ate here while they were in town, the internet found out, and a tiny
noodle counter in Huangpu turned into somewhere people travel for.
What I actually wanted to know is whether a ninety year old shop charging a few dollars
a bowl holds up under that kind of attention, or whether the queue outside is
just the movie. So I went on my first day back in Shanghai, ordered the set the
way the regulars do, and gave it a real number at the end.
