Scientist Tom Hata explores how tiny algae spores can survive on rocky shores constantly battered by breaking waves. In his research, Tom measures water velocity in the boundary layer, which is a delicate layer just above the surface of the rock--even engineering his own device to measure the water's velocity as it rushes over the rocks.
