Just like the characters in his novels, Tolstoy was obsessed with life’s meaning and purpose. In today’s world, our struggle is not against the natural elements as much as against other people. So Tolstoy focused his creative energy on how we navigate society. If Dostoevsky was a psychologist, Tolstoy was a sociologist or social psychologist.
