Kings and Generals and Wizards and Warriors animated lore documentary series on the world of Tolkien - Middle-Earth continues with a video on the unexplained monsters. What are the most mysterious monsters in Tolkien’s legendarium? In this video, we explore three of Middle-earth’s most unsettling and least explained beings: the Watcher in the Water, the Nameless Things beneath Moria, and Old Man Willow. Unlike Orcs, dragons, or Balrogs, these entities resist easy classification, existing at the edges of Tolkien’s mythology and hinting at ancient evils older than recorded history. We begin with the Watcher in the Water, the tentacled horror outside the Doors of Durin that nearly dragged Frodo to his death. From there, we descend into the abyss beneath Khazad-dûm to examine the terrifying Nameless Things, creatures so ancient and obscure that even Sauron does not know them. Finally, we enter the Old Forest, where Old Man Willow reveals Tolkien’s darker vision of nature, memory, and malice. Drawing from Tolkien’s text and interpretations by major scholars, this video explores how these unexplained monsters deepen the mystery of Middle-earth. They are more than threats in the story.
