When like-minded people join forces to invest in children and young people the outcome is a life-long Tohfa ‘a Gift’ that gives to this generation and for generations to come.
Thanks to Leeds Music Education Partnership (LMEP), Yorkshire Young Musicians (YYM), Future Talent, parents and individual donations, SAA-uk's first Spring concert of 2024 featured next generation talent to emerge from Leeds, presenting their first solo performances on Sitar and Santoor.
The three soloists (Kirtan Kaur Virdee, Sukhraj Singh and Taveesha Vashishta) have been learning and developing their passion and talent for Indian Classical Music since they were very young: ages 4, 9 and 12 respectively.
The performance featured ragas that are primarily associated with Hindustani Music, with the talented Harkiret Singh Bahra accompanying on Tabla.
The young performers have trained under the guidance of Ustad Dharambir Singh and Ustad Harjinderpal Singh, with contributions to their learning from Smt Gunwant Kaur, Jasdeep Singh Degun and Eeshar Singh through SAA-uk's Hindustani Music Academy in Leeds.
Tohfa stood as a testament to the transformative impact of donations and bursaries, notably exemplified by the Future Talent Bursary, which has been a steadfast pillar supporting young Sukhraj's musical journey since the age of 9.
South Asian Arts-uk (SAA-uk) is a registered charity that was set up in 1997 by Ustad Dharambir Singh MBE to preserve the art of South Asian classical music and dance. The organisation was designed to pass down its love of the South Asian arts to the next generations through performances, community events and a complex education programme.
