Today as it Happened on Wednesday, September 2, 2026:
Major medical groups have released their vaccine recommendations for the 2026-2027 respiratory virus season, stepping in as federal health agencies face credibility concerns under the influence of anti-vaccine advocate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
The American Medical Association and several leading specialty groups — including family physicians, pediatricians, infectious disease specialists, and OBGYNs — are aligned on the flu vaccine: it is recommended for everyone 6 months and older.
On COVID vaccines, some medical groups are going further than the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While the CDC recommends parents of children under 18 consult their doctor, several specialty groups say the COVID vaccine should be given to children 6 months to 23 months old. For children ages 2 to 18, those groups recommend vaccination if the child is at high risk of severe COVID infection.
Private debt collectors are helping the Trump administration impose massive civil penalties on immigrants accused of being in the country illegally as a way to encourage them to leave on their own.
The ongoing Scripps News ICE Inc. investigation found the companies are able to profit off both the tax dollars awarded to them in government contracts and in steep fees they are tacking onto fines that few migrants are actually paying.
And U.S. Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts secured the Democratic nomination in his bid for a third term in office Tuesday, fighting off a challenger who argued that it was time for a generational change.
Markey, 80, defeated U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton, 47, in the Senate primary.
Meanwhile, new ads paid for by a pro-Trump PAC are spotlighting the administration's economic messages and priorities.
Scripps News political director Andrew Rafferty puts Markey's win in context and explains what it means for the upcoming midterms. And we break down the timing and the money that has gone into the latest bout of pre-election advertising.
