Doctors are often seen as figures of authority, and people tend to default to their medical opinions even when it contradicts their own experiences and concerns. This dynamic can lead to situations where patients dismiss their own symptoms because a doctor downplays them. In cases of chronic illness, a patient might repeatedly report issues, only to be reassured that nothing serious is wrong—until the condition worsens. This trust in authority, while generally beneficial, also creates room for misdiagnoses and misconceptions to persist, particularly in how different demographics are treated. For example, biases still exist in how women and people of color are perceived regarding pain tolerance and medical conditions, often leading to inadequate care.
This discussion raises a critical ethical dilemma: Where does personal conviction end, and where does responsibility to others begin? Should someone be forced to act against their personal moral beliefs if refusing to do so would harm others? The question is especially relevant in cases where personal biases or ideological stances affect medical decisions. While autonomy is important, does it justify neglecting or mistreating patients due to personal or systemic biases? WHAT IS THE NON-PROPHETS?

The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.
