Church of the City desires to join generations before us in once again becoming a patron of the arts. The works on created for "To the Ends of the Earth" gallery were all commissioned by the Church for the love of our city and the glory of God.
To the Ends of the Earth" is a multi-disciplinary group exhibition based on the book of Acts, derived from Acts 1:8 “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
The presentation and sharing of this work is meant to be a gift, invitation, and impetus for wonder and contemplation for the city of New York. The work draws from the concepts and ideas found in the book of Acts, but lean into the 'faithful improvisation' of the moment we live in, or, 'the fifth act'.
The “Fifth Act” comes from the idea that God’s story has unfolded in a five-act drama, and we currently live in the final act. In light of this, we are empowered by the Holy Spirit to faithfully improvise based on the script so far to find our place in the great story of God’s redemptive work in the world.
The exhibition features eight new, commissioned works from nine different artists:
