Sarah Moon Japanese | To Exist / There Is ~あります・~います| Japanese for Beginners, pt. 17 @SarahMoonJapanese | Uploaded April 2021 | Updated October 2024, 1 hour ago.
* This is an edited re-upload. As a translator, I often use the verb "to have" when translating arimasu and imasu into English, because it just sounds more natural in English. So in the original video I used "to have" as a lot of my examples and I found out after the fact that it's a very misleading way to teach the concept to learners. This is why you'll see several black boxes in this edit (I'm covering over the parts where I translated the model sentences in this confusing way.) I also messed up the particles in a couple of my model sentences (left out particle-ni to show that an object belongs to a subject), so I just cut those sentences out altogether. The original video was way too long anyway, so it's a win-win.
An introductory Japanese lesson for beginners! In this video, you’ll learn how to say sentences that start with "there is" or "there isn't" when talking about objects or people. Model sentences and vocab are all shown on the screen in kanji, kana, and English.

Please don't learn 100% of your Japanese from me! I'm a highly-experienced J-E translator and teacher of dance and theater, but a beginning level teacher when it comes to Japanese. It's also best to learn from a variety of sources (preferably native Japanese) and to hear the concepts explained by multiple people (again, preferably native Japanese).
