After the Gang of Four consolidated their grip on power and survived the Oil Crisis, the former eastern colonies of the Reich gradually gained more autonomy as the GO4 transfers power to the native governments. Moskowien, the largest of all colonies, was finally granted self-rule in the early 80s with Mikhail Gorbachev as its first and only president of the Republic.
Meanwhile in the east, the Central Siberian Republic under the social democratic Humanists had managed to unify all of Russia east of Moskowien, forming the Commonwealth of Russia. As calls for unification grew louder in the two republics, a series of talks began with the approval from the now democratized Germany. Soon both sides agreed to combine both states and the Russian parts of Kaukasien into a new Federative Republic of Russia, while the Volga German Republic would be incorporated into the federation as an autonomous republic.
