This week we got to test the TM 250EN-X, U.S. Edition. This is the rarest of the rare. TM is a company that seems to do the impossible, year after year. It’s a tiny firm out of Pesaro, Italy that manages to match big companies like KTM and Honda technologically blow for blow. Two strokes continue to be what the company is best known for here in the U.S. but the company has every manner of dirt bike; four-stroke, two-stroke, carbureted, EFI, you name it. Beyond that, TM is subdividing markets with very specialized products. This bike is a perfect example. It’s a two-stroke cross country racer, which is already a very U.S. oriented segment, but the importer has further focused it with a list of special parts and designated it the “U.S. Edition.” Those parts include a VHM head, a DPR cone pipe and a DPR silencer.
It’s actually not that confusing when you consider how the U.S. importer is operating. 71 Powersports is building bikes to order. So, you pick all that parts you want, the order goes to Italy and a bike arrives a month or so later. It’s a great time saver because there’s no need to shop for aftermarket parts when you get the bike. They are already on it. The base price for the 250EN-X (E-start) is $11.299. The motor itself has some old-school tech mixed with new stuff. It has a Keihin carburetor and an electronic power valve. The power valve is wired into the gearbox and operates differently in each gear. In second gear, for example, the power valve doesn’t fully open, even at max rpm.
