Titanium dioxide (TiO2), is a an insoluble white powder used extensively in many commercial products, including paint, cosmetics, plastics, paper and food, as an anticaking or whitening agent. TiO2 was first produced commercially in 1923 and is obtained from a variety of ores mined from deposits located throughout the world. It is produced and used in workplaces in varying particle-sizes, including fine and ultrafine (nano) sizes. The number of workers in the United States exposed to TiO2 in not currently known. TiO2 is used mainly in paints, varnishes, lacquer, paper, plastic, ceramics, rubber, and printing ink. TiO2 is also used in welding rod coatings, floor coverings, catalysts, coated textiles and fabrics, cosmetics, food colors, roofing granules, rubber tire manufacturing and in the production of electronic components and dental impressions. The highest levels of inhalation exposure have been found during packing and milling, although high exposures have also occurred in site cleaning and maintenance. No significant inhalation exposure is thought to occur during the use of products in which TiO2 is bound to other materials, such as in paints. Workers may be exposed by ingestion or dermal contact. Worker exposure to TiO2 is regulated, in the US. Sadly, the OSHA exposure limit is based on science from the 1960s and has not been updated due to legal and political obstacles from industry and antiregulatory groups. NIOSH classified TiO2 as a potential occupational carcinogen in 1988, based on lung tumors in animal studies. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) made a similar finding of possible carcinogenicity in 2011. For more information on the occupational health hazards of exposure to titanium dioxide, read the 2011 NIOSH Current Intelligence Bulletin 63 Occupational Exposure to Titanium Dioxide, posted at cdc.gov/niosh/docs/2011-160/pdfs/2011-160.pdf.
