Throughout their long history, Jews have evolved a variety of survival strategies to deal with persistent, yet ever-changing forms of hatred. Cultural innovations, social adaptations, economic tools and even armed resistance have been utilized as this tiny minority struggles to endure centuries of persecution in hostile environments. This lecture will survey a number of key periods in Jewish history from the Roman era through the Inquisition and the Holocaust, concluding with a discussion of our current challenges.
