Drawing realistic hair isn’t about drawing every single strand.
One of the biggest misconceptions about hyper-realism is that hair is created one hair at a time. In reality, I start by building up the values, shadows, and overall flow of the hair with charcoal. Once the foundation is in place, I use an eraser to carefully pull out the highlights and finer details.
It’s the contrast between the darks and lights that creates the illusion of thousands of individual hairs.
This stage of the portrait process is always one of my favourites to watch come to life.
