Bouquins & Books | Tips for Booktube Watchers: A Response Video @bouquinsbooks | Uploaded August 2022 | Updated October 2024, 8 hours ago.
A week has passed since I filmed this video, and I now realize that did not frame the issue as well as I would like. First and foremost, I did not frame Brian's video correctly. I apologize for that. He gives a perfectly valid explanation of how the system works, and he is not telling viewers what they should do.

What truly got me annoyed is not the advice that Brian gave, it's the underlying premise of the video, i.e. the system. I feel like Youtube is washing its hands of any ethical decision and is dumping it on its users (creators and viewers alike). I am not comfortable with the idea that it's up to the viewers to make the algorithm work. YouTube (and social media) should be at the service of its users, not the other way around.

I realize that I am rambling a little bit in this video. So here are the main points:
- As viewer, it is not your responsibility to feed YouTube's algorithm. You owe nothing to YouTube or content creators. You are not a bad booktube watcher if you don't like, subscribe, send money, etc.
- Comments are the best way to connect with content creators.
- To be part of the community, comment, take part in booktube activities, engage with other viewers...
- Use YouTube in the way that suits you. Don't change your habits to please the algorithm.

Thank you for watching!
