The 15 kHz to 20 kHz range sits at the absolute upper limit of human hearing. Tinnitus here presents as an extreme high-pitched hiss, whistle or presence — often the most piercing and difficult to mask. Standard noise masking at lower frequencies may not reach it.
Tinnitus Apex uses a broad high frequency noise base — sloping off the low frequencies in a character similar to Blue Noise — with a notch filter sweeping continuously from 15 kHz up to 20 kHz and back on a 40 second cycle. 20 seconds ascending. 20 seconds descending. The notch has a Q of 5 — broad and deep enough to create a moving void across the full upper tinnitus range rather than a pinpoint dip at a single frequency.
As the notch sweeps through your tinnitus frequency the contrast between the surrounding noise and the void may help draw the mind's attention away from the internal ringing. The slow 40 second cycle means the notch crosses your frequency approximately once every 20 seconds — enough movement to hold attention without becoming distracting.
