Timofei Dokshizer - Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 1 (Trumpet Concerto version by T. Dokshizer) [PART 2 of 3]

In his book, "The Memoirs of Timofei Dokshizer- An Autobiography," [available from the International Trumpet Guild (www.trumpetguild.org)] Dokshizer tells the story behind this trumpet concerto made from Shostakovich's famous piano concerto. For years, Dokshizer had tried to find the appropriate time and location to approach Shostakovich to write a concerto for trumpet. They would often see each other at public functions and Shostakovich would nod his head and say, "I will write it. I will." But respecting his favorite composer and not wanting to push the issue, or be a nuisance, Dokshizer admits that perhaps he didnt try hard enough to persuade the composer to write a piece. They had discussed the possibility of a concerto on a couple of occasions, but never formally met to go through the process of composing a piece. "Paying due respect, worshipping him," and perhaps, "trying to make up for wasted time," as Dokshizer put it, he made an arrangement of Shostakovich's Piano Concerto. This was a piece Dokshizer had performed the solo trumpet part to numerous times beginning during the concerto's post war revival.

It was Dokshizer's wish that the trumpet version would become as popular as the piano version. By writing his own transcription, Dokshizer wanted to rebut the famous saying of Henrikh Neigaus, "To blow the trumpet, to creak the violin, to whistle into the flute, to play the piano." I think Timofei succeeded quite well!

This particular recording was made in 1995 and appeared on a CD I produced for Timofei in 2003 called, "Transcriptions."
